A kite fighting game set over the rooftops at festival time. When two kite strings cross, the faster one cuts the other. Sweep your kite across rival strings at speed, dodge their swoops and send their kites drifting away.

About Patang Baazi

Patang baazi is kite fighting, the rooftop sport of Makar Sankranti and Basant, where the aim is not to fly the highest kite but to cut everyone else's string with your own. This game keeps the one idea that matters and throws away the rest: when two strings cross, the one moving faster wins.

You fly a red and yellow kite from a rooftop at the bottom of the screen. It follows your mouse or your finger, with a white string running back to the child holding the spool. Rival kites rise from the neighbouring roofs, each on its own string. Sweep your kite quickly across a rival's string and it snaps: the kite tumbles away on the wind, the crowd shout goes up and you score. Cross it slowly and nothing is cut. The two strings just grind against each other in a pench and spring apart. A bar under the score shows your string speed and turns green when you are moving fast enough to cut.

The rivals fight back. Every so often one of them stops, shakes, and draws a red dotted line through your string. A moment later it dives along that line at full speed. If your kite is dawdling when its string crosses yours, you are the one who gets cut, and you have only three kites. Move your kite out of the line, or be moving faster than the diver, and its attack fails and leaves it tired and slow for a second, which is the best time to strike.

Cuts in quick succession build a combo worth up to eight times the points. Some later kites are bigger and need two cuts, and laddoos dropped by cut kites are worth a bonus. Best score and most cuts are saved.

How to play Patang Baazi

Move your kite with the mouse or by dragging a finger. To cut a rival, sweep your kite quickly so that your white string crosses their string while the speed bar is green. When a rival shows a red dotted line toward your string, move your kite away from it or keep moving fast, because a diving rival that crosses your string while you are slow cuts your kite. You have three kites.

Controls

Desktop: move the mouse to fly the kite, or use the arrow keys or WASD; P to pause, M to mute. Touch: drag a finger and the kite follows it. There is no button to press; cutting is done by moving fast.

Tips & tricks

  • Go for kites that are drifting, not diving. A drifting kite is slow, so any sweep with the bar in the green cuts it.
  • Long sweeps beat short jerks. The speed bar needs a moment to fill, so start the swing well before the crossing.
  • A rival that has just finished a dive shows a small z and is slow. Cut it before it recovers.
  • The red dotted line shows exactly where the dive will go. Step your kite sideways across it and the string follows.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cut a kite in Patang Baazi?

Make your string cross the rival's string while your kite is moving faster than theirs and the speed bar is green. A slow crossing only causes a tangle and both kites spring apart.

Why was my kite cut?

A rival dived across your string while your kite was moving slower than it was. Dives are always announced by a red dotted line a moment beforehand, so there is time to move.

What is patang baazi?

It is the South Asian tradition of kite fighting, popular at Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan and Basant, in which flyers try to cut each other's strings. The shout when a kite is cut is Kaata or Woh Kaata.

Does Patang Baazi save my progress?

Yes — Patang Baazi keeps your best score and settings in this browser's local storage, so they are still there when you come back on the same device. Nothing is uploaded and no account is involved — clearing your browser data is what resets it.
