About Tri Peaks Solitaire

Tri Peaks is a solitaire about momentum rather than patience. Twenty-eight cards sit in three overlapping pyramids above a single face-up pile, and every card you take has to be exactly one rank above or below whatever is showing. Ace neighbours both King and 2, so the ranks close into a ring — K to A to 2 — and no run ever dies just because it reached the end of the deck. The stock holds twenty-three cards and it never refills.

The chain is the whole game. The first card of a run scores 10, the second 20, the third 30, so eight cards taken back to back are worth more than twenty cards ground out one draw at a time. Reaching for the stock resets the chain to zero and costs twenty points, which is why the interesting question is never "what can I take" but "what can I take last". Two uncovered cards of the same rank are the classic trap: spend the wrong one and the run stops dead a move early.

The pyramids unpick from the bottom up — a card only turns face up once both cards resting on it are gone — so the board belongs to whoever looks at what a move opens rather than what it pays. Finishing a peak is worth 250, and clearing all three pays 500 plus 25 for every card you never had to draw. Each deal is searched for a winning line before it reaches the table, so a game you lose is a game you could have won, and undo is there when you want to go back and prove it.

Where Tri Peaks Solitaire comes from

Tri Peaks was created by Robert Hogue in 1989 as a relative of Golf solitaire: three overlapping pyramids are cleared by taking any uncovered card one rank above or below the waste pile. Hogue's own computer analysis found that more than 90% of deals are completely solvable, and his scoring rewarded long unbroken runs, which is where the chain bonus in most versions comes from. The original shipped in Microsoft's Windows Entertainment Pack 3 and was later made one of the five games in Microsoft Solitaire Collection (2012); this version is 360 PlayZone's own take on the classic. How to play Tri Peaks Solitaire

Tap any uncovered card in the peaks that is one rank above or below the card on the pile — a 7 takes a 6 or an 8, and an Ace takes a King or a 2. A peak card only becomes available once both cards resting on top of it have gone. Cards taken back to back build a chain, and every card in the run is worth more than the one before it. When nothing matches, tap the stock to turn a fresh card onto the pile; that resets the chain and costs twenty points. Clear all twenty-eight cards to finish the deal, and use undo if you spend the wrong card.

Controls

Desktop: click an uncovered card to take it and click the stock to draw; arrow keys move the marker, Space takes, D draws, U undoes, H hints, N deals again, ? opens the rules and M mutes. Touch: tap a card to take it, tap the stock to draw.

Tips & tricks

  • A base card pays off when its neighbour goes too — the row above only turns face up once both cards resting on it are gone. Taking two adjacent base cards opens the board far faster than picking off one card here and one card there.
  • When two uncovered cards share a rank, take the one that uncovers something. The spare copy is what keeps a chain alive later, and it costs nothing to leave it sitting there.
  • An apex is worth 250 and it is not going anywhere. Never break a running chain to grab one — the peak bonus is the same whether you take it now or eight cards later, while a chain you drop is gone for good.
  • Every draw costs twenty points and kills the chain, so drawing to win a single card loses money. Hold the stock until the board is genuinely stuck, or until the card you turn can start a run of three or four.
