About Klondike Solitaire
Klondike is the solitaire — the seven-column game everyone pictures when they hear the word — and this version plays it straight. The deck deals into seven piles, the 24-card stock turns three at a time the way the classic rules intend, and a visible toggle drops it to draw-1 whenever you want a gentler ride. Your choice is remembered for next time.
Scoring follows the familiar standard: ten points for every card that reaches a foundation, five for a waste card put to work or a face-down card flipped, and a penalty if you pull one back down. The tactical crunch arrives mid-game, when an empty column opens and you have to commit to a red or black King before you know which Queens the stock is hiding.
Tap a card, tap its destination — or drag if you prefer — and double-tap anything that belongs on a foundation. With multi-step undo, unlimited recycles and an auto-finish button once every card is face-up, it suits both a careful lunchtime grind and a fast broken-streak retry.
Where Klondike Solitaire comes from
Klondike is the patience that Microsoft turned into what has been called the most prolific PC game of all time: Wes Cherry wrote Microsoft Solitaire as a summer intern in 1988, Susan Kare drew its card backs, and it shipped with Windows 3.0 on 22 May 1990, partly to teach a generation of new users how to drag and drop with a mouse; by 1994 Microsoft was saying it had been the most-used Windows application for years. Klondike itself is older, recorded in the 1907 Hoyle's Games as 'Seven-Card Klondike' and long called Canfield in America, and although its name is usually tied to the gold rush of the 1890s no evidence for that link has been found; nor can every deal be won, since with every card visible about 82% of deals are solvable, while a skilled player with the cards face down wins nearer 43%. Inside Klondike Solitaire: what we checked
The numbers below come from Klondike Solitaire's own source code, and the screenshots are from our own test run of the game (20 October 2026).
- Scoring is simple and never goes below 0: 10 points for each card sent to a foundation, 5 for a card moved from the waste pile to the tableau, 5 for turning a tableau card face up, and a 15-point loss for pulling a card back down from a foundation. Moving cards between tableau piles scores nothing.
- In Draw 3 you can go through the stock as many times as you like without penalty. In Draw 1 each time you turn the waste back into the stock costs 100 points.
- The clock does not start at the deal but with your first move. The Played count rises every time a deal starts, so a deal you abandon counts as played but not won.
- The AUTO button only appears once the stock and waste are empty and every tableau card is face up, and it then plays the rest of the game to the foundations for you.
- Undo (U) steps back up to 400 moves. Space or Enter draws from the stock, D switches between Draw 3 and Draw 1 at any time, and double-tapping a card sends it to a foundation. The draw mode, games played and won, and your best score, time and move count are saved in this browser.

How to play Klondike Solitaire
Build the four foundations from Ace to King, one per suit. On the tableau, stack downward in alternating colors, move face-up runs together, and put Kings — only Kings — on empty columns. Turn the stock three cards at a time (or one, with the toggle) and recycle it as often as you need. Get all 52 cards onto the foundations to win.
Controls
Desktop: click a card, then click its destination, or drag it; double-click sends a card to its foundation. Space draws, U undoes, D switches draw-3/draw-1, A auto-finishes, N deals, M mutes. Touch: tap a card, tap where it goes; double-tap sends it home.
Tips & tricks
- In draw-3 the stock repeats in fixed threes, so one waste play shifts the whole rhythm — spend a single move to unlock cards you could never reach otherwise.
- Dig at the tall right-hand columns first; the six face-down cards under column seven are where games are won or lost.
- Before you fill an empty column, ask which color King you need — a red King wants black Queens, and the wrong choice can dead-end a whole suit.
- Undo is free but the recycle isn't in draw-1 — the −100 hit means you plan a full pass of the stock before you flip it.
