Pilot a lone ship through a deadly asteroid field. Blast the rocks into smaller pieces, dodge the debris, and survive wave after wave.

About Space Rocks

Your ship is a fragile little triangle adrift in a room full of tumbling rocks, and the only laws that matter are momentum and patience. Thrust nudges you forward, then keeps carrying you long after you let go, so flying here is less about steering and more about anticipating where the drift will spit you out. You rotate, line up a shot, and fire into the dark. That is the whole loop, and it is quietly addictive.

The tension lives in the splitting. Blast a fat asteroid and it does not vanish; it fractures into faster, meaner shards that scatter across the screen, so the field gets busier before it thins out. Clear a wave with three chunks converging and one bullet left, and you feel it. When a flying saucer slides in from the edge and starts hunting you, there is no panic button: you turn, thrust and shoot your way clear or you lose a ship.

It rewards restraint over spray-and-pray, and it never really ends. Good for anyone who likes their arcade action clean, hard, and honest about physics.

Where Space Rocks comes from

Asteroids was designed by Lyle Rains and Ed Logg at Atari and reached arcades in November 1979, combining ideas from Spacewar!, Computer Space and Space Invaders on the same vector display hardware as Atari's Lunar Lander. It became Atari's best-selling arcade game, with more than 70,000 cabinets sold, and its Atari 2600 port sold over three million copies. Asteroids is an Atari trademark; the game on this page is an open-source browser recreation of the concept, not the licensed original. Source.

Inside Space Rocks: what we checked

The numbers below come from Space Rocks's own source code, and the screenshots are from our own test run of the game (20 October 2026).

Space Rocks start screen with outlined rocks drifting behind the text Press Space to Start
The start screen: outlined rocks drift behind the prompt, and Space starts the game.
Space Rocks mid-game with one large rock, several small fragments and the tiny triangle ship near the centre
A few seconds into our test run: a large rock is still drifting, the others have already broken into small fragments, and the small ship sits near the centre.
  • You start with three ships in total (the one you fly plus two spares) and the first wave is just two rocks. Each wave adds one more rock, up to a maximum of twelve.
  • Every rock splits in three when shot, twice: a large rock into three medium ones, each medium into three small ones, and a small one is simply destroyed.
  • Points go up as the rock gets smaller: 20 for a large rock, 60 for a medium one and 180 for a small one. Shooting the flying saucer is worth 200.
  • The saucer first appears 30 to 60 seconds after the game starts, and then returns at random intervals of up to 30 seconds. It fires back at you.
  • You can have at most 10 of your own shots on screen at once, and a shot disappears after a short flight, so you cannot fire endlessly across the screen.
  • The ship and everything else wraps around the screen edges. After you lose a ship, the next one appears in the centre only once that spot is clear of rocks. P pauses and M mutes.

How to play Space Rocks

Rotate and thrust your ship through open space, shooting the drifting asteroids as you go. Hit a big rock and it splits into faster, smaller fragments, so the screen gets busier before it ever clears. Keep an eye out for the occasional flying saucer, which hunts you and shoots back.

Controls

Left / Right arrows to rotate, Up to thrust, Space to fire.

Tips & tricks

  • Keep moving — a stationary ship is an easy target.
  • Clear small fragments fast before they swarm you.
  • Only break big asteroids when you have room to handle the pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a hyperspace button?

No. This version has no hyperspace jump, so the only ways out of a tight corner are turning, thrusting and shooting your way clear.

What happens when you shoot a big asteroid?

It splits into smaller, faster fragments, so the screen gets busier before it clears. Clear every piece to reach the next wave.

Is Space Rocks unblocked at school or work?

Space Rocks needs no plugin or installer, so a school or work laptop opens it like any other page — if it will not load, your network's filter is blocking the site, not the game.

Who made Space Rocks?

Space Rocks is a free browser edition of a well-known classic, rebuilt with modern web technology so it runs anywhere.
