Pilot a lone ship through a deadly asteroid field. Blast the rocks into smaller pieces, dodge the debris, and survive wave after wave.

About Asteroids

Your ship is a fragile little triangle adrift in a room full of tumbling rocks, and the only laws that matter are momentum and patience. Thrust nudges you forward, then keeps carrying you long after you let go, so flying here is less about steering and more about anticipating where the drift will spit you out. You rotate, line up a shot, and fire into the dark. That is the whole loop, and it is quietly addictive.

The tension lives in the splitting. Blast a fat asteroid and it does not vanish; it fractures into faster, meaner shards that scatter across the screen, so the field gets busier before it thins out. Clear a wave with three chunks converging and one bullet left, and you feel it. When a flying saucer slides in from the edge and starts hunting you, hyperspace becomes your panic button, blinking you somewhere random, occasionally somewhere worse.

It rewards restraint over spray-and-pray, and it never really ends. Good for anyone who likes their arcade action clean, hard, and honest about physics.

Where Asteroids comes from

Asteroids was designed by Lyle Rains and Ed Logg at Atari and reached arcades in November 1979, combining ideas from Spacewar!, Computer Space and Space Invaders on the same vector display hardware as Atari's Lunar Lander. It became Atari's best-selling arcade game, with more than 70,000 cabinets sold, and its Atari 2600 port sold over three million copies. Asteroids is an Atari trademark; the game on this page is an open-source browser recreation of the concept, not the licensed original. Source.

How to play Asteroids
