The street game of marbles as a physics puzzle. Drag back and flick your shooter into a chalk ring to knock every marble out before the shots run out. Rings get bigger, fuller and guarded by stones.

About Kanche King

Kanche King is the game of marbles played in lanes and school yards across India, where it is called kanche or goti. A ring is drawn in the dust, marbles are placed inside it, and players take turns flicking a larger shooter marble at them. A marble knocked outside the line is yours. This version keeps that idea and turns it into a game of angles for one player.

You aim by dragging backwards, like pulling a catapult, and letting go. The further you drag, the harder the flick. A row of dots shows the direction and a coloured bar shows the power. The marbles then behave as glass does on packed earth: they roll, slow down and knock into one another, and a heavy shooter passes most of its speed to whatever it hits squarely.

Each ring gives you a fixed number of shots, a few more than the number of marbles. When everything stops, any marble lying outside the chalk line is collected for ten points. Take two or more with one flick and a combo bonus is added. The golden marble, which appears from the second ring, is worth thirty. Clear the ring and every unused shot becomes fifteen bonus points.

The detail that makes it a thinking game is where the shooter ends up. It stays wherever it stops, and your next flick is taken from there. Only if it comes to rest inside the ring is it carried back to the start line. A good shot therefore does two things: it removes a marble, and it leaves the shooter with a clear line to the next one.

Later rings are wider, which means a longer push to the edge, and hold up to twelve marbles. From the third ring stones sit between the start line and the ring. They do not move, and a shooter that hits one bounces off and wastes the shot. Run out of shots with marbles still in the ring and the game is over. The best score is saved.

How to play Kanche King

Drag back anywhere on the screen and release to flick the white shooter. Knock the coloured marbles out of the chalk ring. Each ring must be cleared within the shots shown. The shooter plays its next shot from where it stopped, unless it stops inside the ring. Unused shots score a bonus when a ring is cleared.

Controls

Desktop: drag back with the mouse and release, or use Left and Right arrows to aim, Up and Down for power and Space to shoot; P to pause, M to mute. Touch: drag back anywhere and let go.

Tips & tricks

  • Hit a marble on the side facing the centre of the ring. It then leaves by the shortest route.
  • Marbles near the edge need only a soft flick. Save the full-power shots for the ones in the middle.
  • Line two marbles up and hit the nearer one hard. The combo bonus is worth more than a single marble.
  • Think about where the shooter will stop. A shot that leaves it behind a stone costs you the next turn as well.

Frequently asked questions

How do I shoot in Kanche King?

Press anywhere, drag in the opposite direction to where you want the shooter to go, and release. A longer drag gives a harder flick. On a keyboard, aim with the arrow keys and press Space.

What happens to the shooter after a shot?

It stays where it stops and you play the next shot from there. If it comes to rest inside the ring it is moved back to the start line.

What is the golden marble worth?

Thirty points, against ten for an ordinary marble. One golden marble appears in every ring from the second ring onward.

Does Kanche King save my progress?

Yes — Kanche King keeps your best score and settings in this browser's local storage, so they are still there when you come back on the same device. Nothing is uploaded and no account is involved — clearing your browser data is what resets it.
