About Word Hunt
Word search is the puzzle everyone has done on the back of a menu, and the reason it works is that it asks for pattern recognition rather than vocabulary. You are not trying to think of words — you are given the list. You are just trying to find shapes in noise, which is a completely different and oddly soothing kind of effort.
The grids here run words in all eight directions, which is where the difficulty actually lives. Left-to-right words are found almost instantly because you read that way anyway. Diagonals are much harder, and backwards diagonals hardest of all, since nothing about how you normally read helps you. Most people find the last two or three words on any grid are the ones running up and to the left.
The technique that beats scanning is to hunt first letters rather than whole words. Pick a word from the list, look only for its starting letter across the grid, and check the eight directions from each hit. It is slower per letter and dramatically faster overall, and it makes the diagonals stop being a wall.
