The Demon King has cast you into the depths of Hell. Claw, climb and dash through a sprawling Underworld in this compact Metroidvania, reclaiming the infernal Aspects that will carry you back to your throne.

About Infernal Throne

Infernal Throne is a Metroidvania in miniature. Your seat on Hell's throne has been usurped: the Demon King has cast you into the depths of the Underworld and stripped away your infernal Aspects, and the only way back is up. Built for the js13kGames 2022 competition, the whole game fits in 13 kilobytes — yet it still packs crisp platforming, a proper map screen, save shrines and full boss fights.

The loop is classic ability-gated exploration. Every wing of the caverns hides a lost Aspect — wall climbs, dashes, bone throws — and each power you reclaim turns yesterday's dead ends into today's shortcuts, so the map keeps folding back on itself in satisfying ways. The bosses are compact tests of everything you've learned: when the wind-up starts, the right answer is a dash through the slam and a bone hurled into the recovery, not a trade of hits.

It's a full arc of powers, secrets and comebacks that fits in a single sitting — ideal for anyone who loves exploration platformers but not hundred-hour ones. Open-source game by Ariel Wexler, used under the MIT license.

How to play Infernal Throne

Move with the arrow keys or WASD, jump with Z or Space, and attack with X or J. Explore the Underworld, defeat the guardians holding your stolen Aspects, then trigger those powers with C and V (or K and L) to reach areas that were closed before. Press M or N to check the map, and rest at shrines to save your progress. Fight your way through the Demon King's domain to reclaim your throne.

Controls

Keyboard — arrow keys with Z/X/C/V and M for the map, or WASD with Space/J/K/L and N — and a gamepad works too. There are no touch controls, so it's a desktop game.

Tips & tricks

  • Pull up the map every few rooms — corridors that end at a wall you can't pass are markers for a missing Aspect, so remember them and come back once you've claimed the next power.
  • Touch every shrine you find, even off your route: dying sends you back to your last save, and a thirty-second detour is cheaper than replaying a whole wing of the Underworld.
  • Don't trade hits with bosses — every attack is telegraphed by a wind-up, so hold your dash for exactly that moment, slip through the blow and punish the recovery.
  • Once you can throw bones, use them to clear the spiky enemies guarding ledges from a safe distance before committing to a climb — taking a hit mid-jump usually costs more than the enemy itself.
