A night-market stealth game. You are the chor: sneak between the stalls, stay out of the police torchlight, grab every money bag and slip out through the exit. Get spotted and the chase is on.

About Chor Police

Chor Police is named after the chasing game every Indian schoolyard knows, thieves against police, and it puts you on the thieves' side. Each night is a closed market seen from above: wooden crates, clay pots and little striped stalls scattered across a tiled square, money bags lying between them, and a locked exit in the far corner. Your thief in a striped shirt starts in the opposite corner with a sack over his shoulder.

The police walk their rounds with torches. Each one throws a cone of light, and the light stops at anything solid, so a crate or a stall is real cover. Step into a beam and a question mark and a small meter appear over the policeman's head. Get out before it fills and he carries on. Stay in it, or get too close, and the whistle blows, the beam turns red and he runs straight at you. A chase is not the end: you are a little faster than he is, and if you break the line of sight and stay hidden for a few seconds he gives up and goes back to patrolling. If he touches you, you lose one of three lives and start the night again from your corner, keeping the bags you already took.

Take the last bag and the exit unlocks. Finishing a night quickly pays a time bonus, and finishing it without ever being spotted pays a ghost bonus on top. Every night is laid out afresh, with more bags, more police, longer beams and faster patrols as the nights go on.

How to play Chor Police

Move the thief around the market and walk over every money bag to collect it. Keep out of the yellow torch beams; crates, pots and stalls block them. If a meter appears over a policeman, leave his beam before it fills. If he starts chasing, run, break his line of sight behind cover and wait until he gives up. When all bags are collected, go to the exit in the corner. Being caught costs a life, and the game ends after three.

Controls

Desktop: arrow keys or WASD to move, P to pause, M to mute. Touch: hold a finger on the screen and the thief walks toward it.

Tips & tricks

  • Watch which way a policeman is walking before you cross his path. The beam always points where he is heading.
  • Cover works. A beam cannot pass through a crate, pot or stall, so standing right behind one is safe.
  • A policeman who stops at the end of his route sweeps his torch from side to side. Give him extra room.
  • When chased, turn corners. He loses you after a few seconds without a clear view.

Frequently asked questions

What is chor police?

Chor police, thieves and police, is a traditional chasing game played by children across India. This version turns it into a single-player stealth game in which you play the thief and the computer plays the police.

How do I lose a policeman who is chasing me?

Run behind crates, pots or stalls so that he cannot see you. After a few seconds without a clear view he stops chasing and returns to his patrol. You are slightly faster than he is.

What is the ghost bonus?

If you collect every bag and reach the exit without any policeman ever starting a chase that night, you get 50 extra points on top of the normal clear and time bonuses.

Does Chor Police save my progress?

Yes — Chor Police keeps your best score and settings in this browser's local storage, so they are still there when you come back on the same device. Nothing is uploaded and no account is involved — clearing your browser data is what resets it.
