About Flood It
Flood It is a calm-but-cunning color puzzle. You command the tile in the top-left corner, and every turn you repaint your whole region a new color — swallowing every matching neighbor it touches and steadily spreading across the grid. The catch is a strict move budget that scales with board size, so flooding the most cells right now is rarely the same as winning. Greedy grabs feel great early but leave scattered pockets that cost you the game; the real skill is reading the board several moves ahead and choosing colors that knit the whole thing together. With three board sizes, six clearly distinguished colors (each marked with its own symbol for colorblind players), and a per-size best-score chase, it rewards both quick sessions and obsessive optimization.
Where Flood It comes from
Flood-It was released as a computer game in 2006 by LabPixies, an Israeli studio best known for its iGoogle gadgets; the game became one of its most popular titles on the iPhone, and Google bought the company in April 2010. That same month researchers in the University of Bristol's Algorithms Research Group proved that finding the fewest floods for a board with three or more colours is NP-hard, putting the little puzzle in the same complexity class as some of the hardest problems in computer science. Inside Flood It: what we checked
The numbers below come from Flood It's own source code, and the screenshots are from our own test run of the game (20 October 2026).
- There are three board sizes, each with its own move limit: Small 11 × 11 allows 22 moves, Classic 14 × 14 allows 28 and Big 18 × 18 allows 36.
- You always flood from the top-left corner. The flooded area is every tile joined to the corner by squares that share an edge, so tiles touching only at a corner do not count.
- Every colour carries its own shape (circle, triangle, square, diamond, star, cross), so the six colours can be told apart without relying on hue.
- Choosing the colour you already have does not cost a move.
- Each board is dealt completely at random, with six colours on every tile; the game does not check that a board can be finished inside the limit.
- Press 1 to 6 to pick a colour, or move the picker with the arrow keys and press Enter or Space. Your fewest moves for each size and your last chosen size are saved in this browser.

How to play Flood It
Your region starts as just the top-left tile. Pick a color and your entire region floods to that color, absorbing any connected tiles that already match it. Keep choosing colors to grow your region until the whole board is one single color before you run out of moves.
Controls
Mouse/touch: tap a color button to flood. Keyboard: number keys 1-6 pick a color, Left/Right arrows move the picker and Enter/Space floods, N starts a new game, M toggles mute.
Tips & tricks
- Don't just chase the biggest single grab — the color that absorbs the most cells this turn often leaves awkward pockets that cost you later.
- Look one or two moves ahead: pick a color now that sets up an even bigger flood on your next turn.
- Push toward whichever edge or corner has the largest untouched cluster so you don't strand isolated patches.
- Late game, count the colors still bordering your region and sweep them in an order that finishes the board in the fewest repaints.
