Unscrew coloured bolts from a stack of wooden plates, sort them into matching trays before the slots run out, and watch each freed plate swing and drop. Forty hand-verified puzzles that start gentle and end devious.
About Bolt Buster
Bolt Buster is a tidy little workshop puzzle. Plates of wood and metal lie layered on a board, each pinned by one to four coloured bolts, and you can only unscrew a bolt that is not covered by a plate above it. Every bolt you remove has to go somewhere: into a tray of its own colour, which clears with a jingle when its three slots fill and slides in a fresh tray of a colour you still need, or into a small spare tray that holds a couple of bolts of any colour. Fill every slot with no move left and the level is lost; free every plate and it is solved.
The pleasure is physical as much as logical. A plate down to its last bolt swings from it like a pendulum, and when that bolt comes out the plate drops off the board. Working out which order frees the plates without flooding the trays is the whole puzzle, and the later levels stack five or six layers and four colours into a tight spare tray so that one careless bolt locks you out. An undo and a limited hint are there for the moment you need them, at the cost of a star.
All forty levels are generated from fixed seeds and checked by an exact solver, so every one of them is solvable with the trays it gives you. Progress and stars are saved. It is a calm, satisfying game for a few minutes at a time, on a phone or at a desk.

How to play Bolt Buster
Tap or click a bolt to unscrew it. Only bolts with nothing covering them can be removed. Each removed bolt goes into a tray of the same colour, or into the spare tray if no matching tray is open. A tray clears when its three slots are full, and a new tray of a needed colour appears. A plate with no bolts left falls off the board, which uncovers the bolts beneath it. Free every plate to clear the level. If every slot is full and no bolt can be removed, the level is lost and you can restart it.
Controls
Desktop: click a bolt, or Tab to a bolt and press Enter, number keys 1 to 9 for the first bolts, U for undo, H for a hint, R to restart, M to mute, Esc to pause. Touch: tap a bolt.
Tips & tricks
- Count the colours before the first move. A tray you fill early is a tray that reappears when you need it.
- Keep the spare tray empty as long as you can; it is your only way out of a colour with no open tray.
- Free the topmost plate first even when a bolt underneath looks tempting: it is often the only reason the level is locked.
- A plate hanging from one bolt is a plate you can drop any time. Leave it until its colour has a tray.
Frequently asked questions
Why can I not remove a bolt in Bolt Buster?
A bolt is locked while a plate above it covers it. Remove the bolts holding the top plate first so it falls away, and the bolt beneath becomes available.
What happens when the trays are full?
If every tray slot and spare slot is full and no bolt can be placed, the level is lost. You can restart it at once; nothing else is lost, and the undo button can take back one move before that happens.
Are all the levels solvable and is progress saved?
Yes. Each of the forty levels is generated from a fixed seed and verified by a solver, so it can always be completed with its trays. Your unlocked levels and stars are saved in your browser.
Does Bolt Buster save my progress?
Yes — Bolt Buster saves your progress and settings in this browser's local storage, so you can pick up where you left off on the same device. Nothing is uploaded and no account is involved — clearing your browser data is what resets it.
