About Spot the Difference
Spot the difference survives because it needs no explanation at all. Two pictures, some small number of changes, find them. There is no tutorial to sit through and no mechanic to learn, which makes it one of the very few games you can hand to absolutely anyone.
What makes a good one is the quality of the changes, and these are well judged. The easy differences are objects that appear or vanish outright. The medium ones are recolours, which your eye slides straight past because the shape is unchanged. The hard ones are mirrored details and small shifts in position — a hand an inch lower, a pattern flipped — and those are the ones that will keep you staring for a full minute.
The technique that works is unglamorous: stop scanning randomly and split both images into quadrants, then compare one quadrant against its twin properly before moving on. Random scanning finds the first three differences fast and then wastes two minutes on the last two. Systematic scanning is slower to start and much faster to finish.
