About Gin Rummy
Gin Rummy is a duel of ten-card hands where the winning move is knowing when to stop. Every turn is the same small decision — take the face-up discard or gamble on the stock, then throw one card away — but each throw tells your opponent something, and this CPU is listening. Take a seven from the pile and it will quietly stop feeding you sevens and everything near them in suit.
The hand arranges itself as you play: runs and sets snap together with a colored band, the leftovers sit apart as deadwood, and a live counter shows exactly what a knock would cost. That is where the game's best moment lives — deadwood at nine, a knock on the table, and the choice between banking a small win now or shaping one more draw into Gin for the 25-point bonus. Knock carelessly and the CPU lays off onto your melds and undercuts you instead.
Rounds settle into a running scoreboard, first to 100 takes the match, and your match record and best hand persist between visits. For card players who like their luck folded inside arithmetic, this is the good stuff.
Where Gin Rummy comes from
Gin Rummy was created in 1909 by Elwood Baker, a New York bridge player, and his son Graham Baker, who is said to have named it after the drink as a play on 'rummy'; the card historian David Parlett regards the Mexican game Conquian as its forerunner. It stayed a New York game until 1941, when it became a Hollywood craze and spread across the United States, and a 1947 survey found that as many people had learned gin during the Second World War as had learned pinochle, cribbage, poker and bridge combined. How to play Gin Rummy
Each turn, draw one card from the stock or the discard pile, then discard one. Collect melds: runs of three or more in one suit, or sets of the same rank — unmatched cards are deadwood, counted at face value with pictures worth ten. When your deadwood is 10 or less you may knock to end the round; reaching zero is Gin and scores a 25-point bonus. After a knock the hands are revealed, the defender lays off cards onto your melds, and the deadwood difference is scored — first to 100 wins the match.

Tips & tricks
- Knock early. A first-chance knock at eight or nine deadwood usually beats waiting for Gin, because every extra turn is a chance for the CPU to knock first or slip under you.
- Watch what the CPU takes from the pile, not what it throws. A picked-up jack of spades means jacks and nearby spades are now dangerous discards for you.
- Prefer middle cards early. A six connects to more possible runs than a king does, and high deadwood is what turns one bad knock into a 30-point swing.
- Before you knock, check what your melds offer for layoffs. Knocking with an open-ended run lets the defender shed deadwood onto it — sometimes right into an undercut.
