About Crazy Eights
Crazy Eights is the card game almost everyone learned from a cousin or a grandparent, and it survives because the rules fit in one breath while the decisions never quite stop mattering. You and the computer each hold a hand. A single card sits face up on the discard pile, and on your turn you either cover it with something that shares its suit or its rank, or you go digging in the deck. Every eight in the pack is wild: play one and you name whichever suit you like, which is exactly how a losing hand claws its way back.
The part that turns it from luck into a game is watching what your opponent can't do. When the CPU draws three cards on a hearts pile, it has told you it holds no hearts, and a good player files that away and steers the suit right back there two turns later. Holding an eight until that squeeze moment usually beats spending it early just to dodge one awkward turn. The flip side is that eights count as heavy cards at the end of a round, so sitting on two of them when your opponent is down to a single card is its own kind of trouble.
Rounds are quick — a minute or two each — and the match runs to three round wins, so a bad shuffle never sinks you outright. It suits anyone who wants a real card game with actual thinking in it, without a tutorial or a sign-up standing in the way.
Where Crazy Eights comes from
Crazy Eights first appeared in the United States in the 1930s under the plain name Eights, and picked up its 'Crazy' prefix in the 1940s from Section 8, the US military's discharge category for soldiers judged mentally unfit; it may descend from the German game Mau-Mau. It is the best-known member of the Eights group of shedding games, in which each card must match the rank or suit of the last one played and eights are wild, a family that includes Switch in England, Mau-Mau in Germany, the patented English game Whot! of 1935 and the commercial game Uno. The card historian David Parlett calls it 'not so much a game as a basic pattern of play on which a wide variety of changes can be rung'; this version is 360 PlayZone's own take on the classic. Inside Crazy Eights: what we checked
The numbers below come from Crazy Eights's own source code, and the screenshots are from our own test run of the game (20 October 2026).
- Only 8s have a special effect. Aces, 2s and picture cards are ordinary cards, and an 8 can be played on anything and lets you name the new suit. The first card turned up is never an 8.
- You can only draw when you have no playable card. The game tells you "You have a play!" if you try otherwise. You draw up to 3 times, and if you still cannot play you pass automatically.
- Going out on an 8 still wins the round straight away; you are not asked to pick a suit first.
- A match is the first to 3 round wins. You start rounds 1, 3 and 5, and the AI starts rounds 2 and 4.
- The AI keeps its 8s back and plays one only when it has nothing else. It prefers to play from the suit it holds most of, and when it does play an 8 it picks the suit using its own hand plus a count of the suits you could not follow earlier in the round.
- Left and right arrows move through your hand, Space or Enter plays the highlighted card, and D or the down arrow draws. Your match wins against the AI are saved in this browser.

How to play Crazy Eights
Play a card from your hand that matches the top of the discard pile by either suit or rank. Any eight is wild and lets you choose the next suit. If nothing you hold is legal, draw up to three cards, and pass if you still can't play. Empty your hand to win the round; the first player to three round wins takes the match.

Desktop: click a card in your hand to play it, click the deck to draw, and click a suit button when you play an eight. M mutes. Touch: tap a card to play, tap the deck to draw, tap your suit choice on the picker.
Tips & tricks
- When the CPU draws several cards in a row, note which suit was showing — it almost certainly has none of that suit, so steering the pile back there later forces it to draw again.
- Don't burn an eight just to escape one awkward turn. Saved for the moment your opponent is down to their last card or two, a wild suit change is worth far more.
- If you hold four cards of one suit and one of another, play the odd card out early. Getting stuck holding a lone off-suit card at the end is what loses close rounds.
- Eights are the heaviest cards to be caught holding when a round ends, so if you're clearly losing the round, spend one rather than hoarding both.
