About Casual Crusade

Casual Crusade is a card-driven dungeon-crawl roguelite that took third place overall at js13kGames 2023, and it earns the ribbon within the first minute: a bold cartoon look, cards that flip and land with real weight, and music that has no business fitting in 13 kilobytes. Your deck is your movement, your clock and your life all at once — every card you play carries you through another dungeon room, and when the deck runs dry, the crusade is over.

Between rooms you gather relics that bend the run's rules, heal at shrines and fold new cards into the deck, so no two crusades build the same way. The defining pinch arrives when you're hurt, two cards from empty, with a shrine one room ahead: spend everything to reach it and you survive with a thinner deck; play safe and the healing may as well not exist.

Runs are short and every one of them ends, which makes this perfect coffee-break deckbuilding — easy to click into, hard to click away from. Open-source game by Antti Haavikko, used under the MIT license.

How to play Casual Crusade

Click or tap a card in your hand to play it and step into the next dungeon room. Pick up relics for passive powers, stop at shrines to heal, and add new cards to your deck whenever you get the chance. The run ends when the deck runs out, so the deeper you get on fewer cards, the better.

Controls

Everything is a single click or tap — play cards with the mouse on desktop or a finger on touch screens; press F for fullscreen.

Tips & tricks

  • Treat your deck like a fuel gauge: the run ends the moment it empties, so a detour that picks up new cards is almost always worth the rooms it costs.
  • Don't burn a shrine at nearly-full health — push a little deeper first, and plan your route so a shrine is within reach when you're genuinely hurting.
  • Grab relics as early as you can; a rule-bending passive picked up in the first rooms pays off in every room after it.
  • Before playing a card, glance at what's left in your hand — committing your last move to a dead-end room with no pickup is how good runs end early.

Casual Crusade is a plain web page — no plugin, no installer, no app store — so it loads on a Chromebook or a locked-down school or office laptop the same way any other page does.
