The rules in sixty seconds
Fifteen balls: seven solids, seven stripes, one black 8. After the break, the first group you legally pocket becomes yours. Pocket all seven of your group, then the 8-ball, and you win. Sink the 8 early, or scratch (pocket the cue ball) while shooting the 8, and you lose on the spot. Everything else — turns, fouls, ball-in-hand — is detail on top of that skeleton.
Aiming: the ghost ball trick
Stop aiming at the ball you want to hit. Instead, imagine a ghost cue ball frozen at the exact spot it must occupy at the moment of contact — touching the object ball, dead in line with the pocket. Your real shot is simply: send the cue ball to where the ghost is. Every aiming aid in every pool game ever made is just this trick drawn for you. Power is a tax, not a flex
New players hit everything at full strength. Watch what happens: the object ball rattles the pocket and stays out, and the cue ball sprints off to the worst spot on the table. Soft shots pocket more balls and leave the cue ball near your next one. That second part is the actual game — good players aren't thinking about this shot, they're thinking about the position it leaves for the next two.
Beating the computer
The AI plays the percentages, so beat it with patience rather than heroics. Take the high-percentage ball even when a spectacular cut is available. When you have no makeable shot, play safe: roll your ball somewhere useful and leave the cue ball glued to a rail, where the AI's options shrink too. And never, ever break up a cluster with the 8-ball's pocket already decided — that's how you gift the frame away. Rounds against the computer are short, which makes it a shockingly good lunch-break game.
