Each animal arrives genuinely filthy — five to seven patches of mud scattered across the coat — and the only way they come off is dragging across them until they fade. Miss one and the owner notices, because the scoring counts what is left rather than how long you spent.

Then the coat has to be dried, which is a second drag-and-hold job with a meter you can watch, and only after that do you get to the fun part: trim length, coat colour, and a shelf of collars, bows, bandanas, hats and even little glasses.

The twist is that the styling is not free choice. Every owner asks for something — smart and tidy, cute and fluffy, sporty and ready for the park — and the trim and accessory you pick either serve that or they do not. A perfectly clean, perfectly dry dog in the wrong outfit still gets a middling score, which is exactly the right lesson for a salon.
